Ròmulo, uno dei tessitori, mentre mostra la lana tinta con colori naturali

In the mountain Community of Huaripampa, people have weaved for ages. In the year 2000, The Mountain Institute started a weaving project there, which resulted in two peasant organizations revalorizing the use of natural dyes for their weaving products. They also investigated traditional patterns of weavings of their ancestors. The results are high-quality weaving products, with a sustainable touch. The weavers’ associations have small plantations where they conserve the plants they use to get ink, which assures an environmental sustainability of their activities.

Thanks to many visits of Crooked Trails and other tourist groups, the groups practiced their weaving and receiving visitors in their communities for many times, and they have been able to send their kids to school with uniforms and materials thanks to the extra income generated by the project.

Now, they got the opportunity to reach a new market in Huaraz. At Yachaqui Wayi, the Responsible Travel Center, they will demonstrate you how to weave and where their colors come from, and you can buy their hand-made products in their shop.

The Demonstration Site and Shop will be finished in March or April 2006, that’s why at the moment we cannot show you any pictures of the shop itself. As soon as the Demonstration Site and Shop is ready, we will place pictures. At this page you can find pictures of the weaving community, the weavers and their products.
